Brittle Bend, 2026

Paris Design Week x Kalve coffee roasters

Developed as part of Found Associations, a collaborative project exploring the café as a small-scale material ecosystem, the work attends to the overlooked matter produced through everyday processes of consumption and service, bringing together coffee effluent, spent brew, fragments of coffee filters, soap, dirt, and water.

The residues are suspended in gelatin and poured onto a thin surface, where drying initiates a gradual process of contraction, hardening, and fracture. The resulting skin-like form occupies an unstable space between the organic and the synthetic: warm amber and translucent, yet marked by folds, deposits, flakes, and points of rupture.

Gelatin functions here as a temporary binding structure, bringing otherwise unrelated residues into a provisional state of cohesion. As this structure deteriorates, the material relations it established begin to loosen, exposing the instability of the form itself. Rather than transforming waste into a fixed or resolved object, Brittle Bend preserves its condition as residue while allowing it to emerge as a sculptural presence.

Punkstiņa approaches material transformation as a form of inquiry, allowing processes of drying, contraction, fracture, and decomposition to participate in the making of the sculpture. The resulting object is less a fixed composition than a temporary material state, suspended between preservation, decay, and cohesion. Brittle Bend consequently questions the presumed durability of the sculptural object, proposing a form whose eventual detoriation is not a failure of the work but part of its existence.
